There are different types of dentures, but not every pair is suitable for everyone. Read on to learn about the different kinds of dentures available.

Traditional dentures

These are a complete set of false teeth held in the mouth by passive retention.

The initial steps to creating an individual pair begins with a set of impressions taken of the gums after tooth extraction. From these, dentures can be precisely  created.

Typically, patients who choose to have a traditional denture in this situation rely on an adhesive or pastes to keep the dentures in place.

Over denture

These dentures are attached to either two common dental implants, or to two mini-implants fitted into the gum. It is usually more stable, and utilises the surface are of your palate to help keep the teeth in place.

Supported implants

These are not technically a type of denture, but instead act like a fixed bridge. Typically, four to six dental implants are placed on the upper and lower arch of the jawline. The denture hybrid is actually fixed within the implants in the mouth.

Supported implants are often regarded as the most stable option for patients, and, unlike the previous options, are not removed overnight. However, due to their complex nature and the amount of dental implants necessary to support them, supported implants are also the most expensive option.

Dental Travel for Oral Hygiene

Dental Toursim

Because contemporary dental travel is relatively new, misconceptions abound. Here are a few, along with the facts:

1. Everyone Can Save Money

While it is true that you can save greatly on the cost of your dental care, traveling abroad for treatment doesn’t make sense for everyone. If you need only fillings, or a single extraction, or a simple check-up and cleaning, the money spent on travel and lodging might not be worth the trade-off unless you already have plans to travel to a given destination. The greatest savings are realized by patients requiring extensive work, such as multiple implants, full dentures, full mouth reconstruction and other costly procedures.

2. Foreign Dentists are Unsafe and Poorly Trained

It depends. Excellent and inferior dentists can be found most anywhere, including the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Many foreign dentists, especially in popular dental destinations such as India, Costa Rica, Mexico, Hungary and Thailand have completed their specialty training at elite US, UK and Australian dental colleges and are members of the American Dental Association, the Australian Dental Association or the British Dental Association. Search online for reviews about specific dentists you may plan to visit and check their credentials. Also, check out photos of Dental Departures member clinics. You may be surprised to find they look more modern than your dentist back home.

3. The Cost of Travel Isn’t Worth It

While it is true that a dental vacation will not financially benefit everyone, some patients can save thousands. The difference in price between having two or three implants or crowns done in the US versus Mexico – or Australia versus Thailand – or India versus Kenya – can more than outweigh $1000 worth of flight and lodging expenses. Older people all over the world, suffer health issues due to the need for major mouth work. The more dental work you need the more money you are likely to save.

4. Insurance Companies Won’t Cover Dental Travel

Your dental insurance company also has an interest in seeing you save money on your dental care. While most dentists abroad will not directly bill your insurance, your dental plan carrier may reimburse you for your dental expenses upon your return. Check with your dental insurance provider before you leave to learn more about their coverage of dental care in another country.

5. Low Cost of Treatment Means Low Quality

The low price of dentistry abroad does not mean “on the cheap.” The best dentists abroad use the same American- and German-made materials and technology as your dentist back home. Because materials prices are often lower abroad, many patients can afford better quality materials than they might be able to afford back home.

Dental care is less expensive abroad largely due to the cost of labor, which runs anywhere from 25%-50% the cost for similar treatment in Canada, the US, Australia or the UK. Dentists practicing outside expensive healthcare countries generally don’t pay nearly as much for dental malpractice insurance; these savings are passed on to you the patient.

6. Foreign Dentists Do Not Sterilize Their Equipment

While standards vary from country to country, every modern dental clinic in the world uses steam Autoclave sterilization chambers to sterilize their tools and equipment. Also, international organizations, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), The Canadian Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities (CAAASF), the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare  (AAAHC), extend memberships, accreditation and international clinical standards to quality dentists all over the world.

You may know what a dental crown is, but do you know how many dental problems a crown can correct? This is one dental trick that spans the gamut of restorative and cosmetic treatments. Read on to learn more about dental crowns and the many ways they can restore and enhance your smile.

WHY DO I NEED A DENTAL CROWN?

There are several dental problems that can be corrected with a crown. Here are a few:

  • Dental crowns are frequently used to protect a tooth that has been weakened because of decay or breakage.
  • If you have a cracked tooth, a crown can hold the parts together and prevent cleaving.
  • Unusually worn teeth can be rebuilt with dental crowns.
  • If a tooth-colored filling is not sufficient to repair a decayed tooth that has minimal structure left, then a dental crown is placed for coverage and support.
  • Dental crowns are mounted on healthy teeth located on both sides of the gap in your smile in order to support a dental bridge.
  • Cosmetically, a crown can be used to cover a tooth that is misshaped, severely discolored or in need of any other type of modification.
  • Crowns are often the finishing touch after a dental implant has been set in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth.

WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN MADE OF?

A crown can be made entirely of tooth-colored ceramic, porcelain-fused-to-metal or metal alloys. The one that is best for you will depend on the reason for placing the crown, where the crown will be located in your mouth and whether or not the crown will be visible whenever you smile or speak.

HOW IS A CROWN PLACED?

Receiving a dental crown typically requires scheduling two visits with the dentist about two weeks apart. At the first appointment, the tooth is prepared; the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth is removed and the tooth is reshaped in order to accommodate the crown.

There must be sufficient space for the crown to fit comfortably alongside adjacent teeth. In addition, the crown can’t sit too high or it will interfere with your bite. Therefore, some tooth structure is filed away from the chewing surface and the sides.

Once this step is completed, a temporary crown is placed so the tooth is still functional while the permanent crown is manufactured in a dental lab.

When you return for the next appointment, the temporary is gently removed and the permanent one is bonded to your tooth.

HOW DO I CARE FOR A DENTAL CROWN?

The same way you care for your natural teeth—with daily brushing and flossing and regularly scheduled dental checkups.
